الجواب
Praise be to Allah, and may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon the Messenger of Allah, his family and his companions. Wa alaikum assalam wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh. As to what follows: In response to your question, we say: The Prophet (peace be upon him) forbade singling out Friday for fasting, as has been transmitted in an authentic hadith by Abu Hurayrah that the Prophet peace be upon him said, “Do not single out the night (preceding) Friday among the nights for prayer and do not single out Friday among days for fasting” [Muslim (1144)]. Thus the Prophet (peace be upon him) forbade singling out Friday for fasting. On one occasion the Prophet (peace be upon him) went into one of his wives’ houses and found her fasting on Friday and he asked her, "Did you fast yesterday?" She said, "No." He said, "Do you intend to fast tomorrow?" She said, "No." He said, "Then break your fast." [al-Bukhari (1986)]. Thus the Prophet (peace be upon him) prohibited singling out Friday for fasting. However, the scholars said, “The prohibition is applicable if the singling out has the intention of specification, that is fasting because it is Friday. As for the person who fasts on Friday because it is his day off from work, or because it is easy for him to fast on that day, and not because he considers Friday to be a special day for fasting; then in this state his fasting is valid and is not part of what is prohibited in the hadith.”
