Dear respected Shaykh, assalamu alaikum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh. What is the ruling of undergoing an in vitro fertilization (IVF) operation in Ramadan? ما حكم إجراء عملية أطفال الأنابيب في رمضان؟

Praise be to Allah, and may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon the Messenger of Allah, his family and his companions.   Wa alaikum assalam wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh.   As to what follows:   In response to your question, we say:     If you want to do that I advise you to delay it until after Ramadan, because there is ample room for that in the issue. Then you should verify about the issue of in vitro fertilization so as not cause a doubtful  lineage. This is a necessity because according to one opinion of the scholars it is not permissible to undergo an in vitro fertilization operation in Ramadan.  The essential condition is that you should be absolutely certain that there is  no mistake which happens in this procedure and leads to a mix-up in    genealogy.  The semen used in the IVF operation should be from the your husband and not any other man.
