الجواب
Praise be to Allah, and may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon the Messenger of Allah, his family and his companions. Wa alaikum assalam wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh. As to what follows: In response to your question, we say: The majority of the scholars from the Hanafites, the Malikites, the Shafi’tes, the Hambalites and the others are of the opinion that intentional ejaculation through means other than sexual intercourse nullifies fasting, regardless of whether ejaculation occurred through masturbation or other means. The proof for that is what was transmitted by the Shaikhan from the hadith of Abu Hurairah that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said, “Allah, the Majestic and the Exalted, said: Every deed of a person is for him except fasting. It is done for My sake, and I will give a reward for it” [al-Bukhari (5927) (Muslim (1151)]. Al-Bukhari’s narration of the hadith states, “He leaves his food, drink and desires for My sake” [al-Bukhari (1894)]. The Prophet’s statement “his desire” is general for all means that lead to ejaculation even if they are not sexual intercourse. However, unintentional ejaculation does not nullify fasting according to the consensus of the scholars because Allah the Exalted said, “And there is no sin on you if you make a mistake therein, except in regard to what your hearts deliberately intend” [al-Ahzab 33: 5].
