Dear respected Shaykh, assalamu alaikum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh. What is the ruling of giving Zakat to one’s relatives? إعطاء زكاة المال للأقارب؟

Praise be to Allah, and may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon the Messenger of Allah, his family and his companions. Wa alaikum assalam wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh. As to what follows: In response to your question, we say:   It is permissible to give Zakat to one’s poor relative, if he is one of the recipients of Zakat and his upkeep is not compulsory on the  Zakat giver. These two conditions are to be considered in the issue of Zakat regardless of whether the recipient is a brother, son or father of the Zakat-giver and so on.
