Dear respected Shaykh, assalamu alaikum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh. Can the guarantor repay the obligee’s debt from the Zakat that is due on his (the guarantor’s) property? دفع الزكاة للمضمون عنه

Praise be to Allah, and may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon the Messenger of Allah, his family and his companions. Wa alaikum assalam wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh. As to what follows: In response to your question, we say:   It is not permissible for the guarantor to repay the debt of the creditor from his Zakat because the liability of the debt is on both the creditor and the guarantor. Thus when the guarantor gives Zakat to pay for the debt which he guaranteed it will be as if he has paid Zakat to himself.
