Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah (may Allah have mercy on him) said: It is from the perfection of knowledge to search for the intent of Allah’s Messenger (peace be upon him) behind it (the knowledge), in order to affirm what he affirmed and negate what he negated of meanings. For it is obligatory upon us to believe him in everything that he has informed us, and to obey him in everything that he has commanded and made obligatory. Then if we happen to know the extra details of that, then that is from additional knowledge and Iman, and Allah Almighty has said: “Allah will raise by degrees those who have believed among you and those who were given knowledge.” [Al-Mujadilah 58:11] [Majmu` al-Fatawa (12/114)] من تمام العلم أن يبحث عن مراد رسوله.
