Impurity of semen نجاسة المني

In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.

The correct opinion from amongst the opinions of the scholars concerning semen is that it is pure and does not cause the clothing or body that has been affected by it to become impure, based on what `A’ishah (may Allah be pleased with her) narrated, “I used to remove it off the garment of the Prophet (peace be upon him) by rubbing, then he used to pray in it.” [Muslim (288)]

So if it was impure, it would not suffice to just rub it off, rather it would require washing it off. Also, this narration confirms another narration of `A’ishah (may Allah be pleased with her), “I used to scratch it off the garment of the Prophet (peace be upon him), after it had dried, with my nails.” [Muslim (290)]

 And it is common knowledge that doing this does not remove impurity [i.e. does not completely purify]. So by this we know that semen is not impure. And this is the madh'hab of the Shafi`is and Hanbalis.
