Ever since I read the hadith of the Prophet (peace be upon him) whose indication is clear and in which the Prophet (peace be upon him) said, "I am free from every Muslim that lives among the polytheists" [at-Tirmithi (1604)], whilst living amongst the polytheists, I have been very confused because the word “free” according to my limited knowledge is from the word “freedom” which is disavowal of any link between people. حديث :أنا بريء من كل مسلم مقيم بين أظهر المشركين

Praise be to Allah, and may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon the Messenger of Allah, his family and his companions. Wa alaikum assalam wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh. As to what follows: In response to your question, we say:   The hadith which you mentioned was transmitted by at-Tirmithi (1604) and Abu Dawud (2645) from Jarir ibn ‘Abdullah al-Bajali, who said, “The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said, “I am free from every Muslim that lives among the polytheists.” Al-Bukhari was of the opinion that the correct view is that the hadith was transmitted by Qais ibn Abi Hazim without a complete chain of narrators. The scholars interpreted the hadith to mean staying in countries which are fighting Muslims. Al-Baihaqi transmitted from the way of al-Hasan on the authority of Samurah that he said, “The Messenger of Allah said, “Do not live among the idolaters, and do not assemble with them, for whoever lives among them or assembles with them then he is not from us.” However, al-Hasan did not hear hadiths directly from the Samurah. I advise you to return to your country so that you can be safe from temptation.
