What is the meaning of the hadith from Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) that prohibited a man should put on sandals while standing? It was transmitted by Abu Dawud with a sound chain of narrators. حديث نهى أن ينتعل الرجل قائما

Praise be to Allah, and may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon the Messenger of Allah, his family and his companions. Wa alaikum assalam wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh. As to what follows: In response to your question, we say:   This hadith indicates that is detestable to wear sandals whilst standing. This is the view of a group of scholars from the Shafi’tes and the Hambalites. Some scholars have interpreted the hadith to mean that it is prohibited to wear sandals whilst standing if that causes harm to the person.  Al-Khatabi said, “The reason for the prohibition is that if a person wears sandals while standing he may fall, so he was commanded to sit down, because that is easier, more helpful , and safer.” A group of scholars like the Malikites held that it was permissible to wear sandals while standing, and that this is not detestable because the hadith which prohibits that is weak. The hadith was narrated by ibn ‘Umar, Abu Hurairah, Jabir and Anas. Al-Bukhari ruled that the hadiths of Abu Huraira and Anas was weak.
