What is the ruling on performing Umrah on the 27th night of Ramadan?

العمرة ليلة سبع وعشرين من رمضان

الجواب

All praise is due to Allah alone, and may the Salah and Salam of Allah be upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family and his companions. To answer your question, we say while seeking all the success from Allah: There is nothing reported in the Quran and Sunnah or from the practice of the companions to suggest that there is any merit or virtue for performing Umrah on the 27th night of  Ramadan. In fact, it is from the practices that some people innovated. However, it is possible that some people do it because they wish to take advantage of the virtue of performing Umrah during the month of Ramadan with the hope of attaining the reward of the 27th night which is the night most likely expected to be the Night of Qadr. In any case, I would like to bring attention to two points that prove the fallacy of this practice: First: The reports indicating the virtue of performing Umrah during the month of Ramadan do not specify a particular night or a time. Rather, it (the virtue) applies to all the days of the month, starting from the first night until the sunset of its last day. This is proven by the following report: ‘Ataa’ ibn Abi Rabah narrated from Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him and his father) that the Messenger of Allah (may the Salah and Salam of Allah be upon him) said to a woman from the Ansar tribe: “Do Umrah in Ramadan, for performing Umrah in it is like doing Hajj.” Reported by al-Bukhari (1782) and Muslim (1256) The Prophet (may the Salah and Salam of Allah be upon him) did not specify a particular time during the month that this virtuous reward will be attained, which proves that the virtue is the same during the entirety of the month of Ramadan. Second: The best deeds to be performed during the Night of Qadr are the night prayer and supplications. This is based on the following two reports: Narrated Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him): I heard Allah's Messenger (may the Salah and Salam of Allah be upon him) saying regarding Ramadan: "Whoever prayed at night in it (the month of Ramadan) out of sincere faith and hoping for a reward from Allah, then all his previous sins will be forgiven." Reported by al-Bukhari (2014) and Muslim (760). Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) reported: “I asked, ‘O Messenger of Allah! If I realize Lailat-ul-Qadr (Night of Qadr), what should I supplicate in it?’ He (may the Salah and Salam of Allah be upon him) replied, ‘You should supplicate: O Allah, You are Most Forgiving, and You love forgiveness, so forgive me.’” Reported by Ahmad (24856) and al-Tirmidhi (3513) The inquiry of Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) shows that the companions understood the virtue of supplication in the Night of Qadr, which explains her question regarding what to say in her supplication on that night.  There is no disagreement between scholars regarding the special virtue of supplication in the night of Qadr and it is known that the best supplication is that which is said in the prayer.  Narrated by Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him): Allah's Messenger (may the Salah and Salam of Allah be upon him) said, “The servant is nearest to their Lord when they are prostrating to Him. So, augment your supplications.” Reported by Muslim (482)   Narrated by Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him and his father): Allah's Messenger (may the Salah and Salam of Allah be upon him) said, “And while prostrating yourselves, be earnest in supplication, for it is fitting that your supplications should be answered.” Narrated by Muslim (479) It is for these reasons, I advise my fellow Muslims to spare no effort to follow that which the Prophet (may the Salah and Salam of Allah be upon him) encouraged us to do – that being: praying the night prayers during the last ten nights, augmenting the supplications, and showing humility in the blessed nights of this blessed month wherever we are. Not only is there no special virtue for performing Umrah on the 27th night of Ramadan, but it is also an innovation to do it with such a belief. The reality shows that people can barely manage to perform it with humility and tranquility on the 27th night because of the large crowds that cause people to push each other, rushing just to finish it as soon as possible. Indeed, there is no good deed in that, not to mention it could cause harm to others. Your brother, Khaled al-Mosleh,   06/09/1425
