Is the discharge of blood from a pregnant woman considered menstrual blood? هل يعتبر الدم النازل من المرأة الحامل دم حيض

Praise be to Allah, and may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon the Messenger of Allah, his family and his companions.

As to what follows:

In response to your question, we say, and with Allah Almighty lies all success:

The discharge of blood from a pregnant woman is one of two cases:

The first case: The blood flows according to its normal habit, as in menstruation before pregnancy. In this case, the scholars have two opinions: The majority of scholars are of the opinion that this is spoiled blood and does not prevent one from praying or fasting. Imam al-Shafi`i, along with a group of scholars and the Hanbalis in one of their opinions, were of the view that this is menstrual blood, thereby preventing one from praying and fasting.

The most correct of these two opinions is that it is spoiled blood; as it has been medically proven that pregnant women do not have menstruation. Therefore, the discharge of blood from a pregnant woman is not menstrual blood; rather it is the blood of veins (blood vessel). And if it was the blood of veins, then it is spoiled blood and does not prevent one from praying and fasting.

The second case: The blood is unusual and irregular to its normal habit. So if it is unusual blood, then it is spoiled blood and does not prevent one from praying.

As for if the blood came out close to the time of delivery, then there are scholars who view it as nifas (post-partum) blood, thus preventing one from praying and fasting. However, the correct view is that it is not post-partum blood; rather it is spoiled blood, thereby not preventing one from praying or fasting. As for the blood of nifas (post-partum), it is that which comes out after delivery.

And Allah knows best.
