Is it compulsory to make up for a voluntary fast?

هل يجب قضاء الصيام النفل

Answer

Praise be to Allah, and may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon the Messenger of Allah, his family and his companions.   Wa alaikum assalam wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh.   As to what follows:   Some scholars say that it is recommended to make up for a missed fast, while others hold that it is compulsory to do so. The correct view is that it is not compulsory to make up a missed fast, and the proof for that is what was transmitted by ‘Aishah that the Prophet (peace be upon him) came to her one day and said, “Do you have anything to eat”. She said, “No”. He said, “I will fast”.  Then he started fasting during the day. On another occasion he came to ‘Aishah and found her with some food. He said, “What is this?” She said, “This is hays (a type of food) which has been offered to us as a gift”. He said, “Show that to me; I had been fasting since morning. He then ate it.”  This proves that a person may break his voluntary fast for no reason, and it is not compulsory for him to make it up.  However, it is recommended to make up voluntary fasts especially if they are for a reason like fasting for three days every month (in following the Sunnah) and so on”.
