Dear respected Shaykh, assalamu alaikum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh. If the sighting of the crescent of Ramadan differs from place to place which sighting should a person follow in fasting? إذا اختلفت رؤية شهر رمضان فمع من نصوم؟

Answer

Praise be to Allah, and may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon the Messenger of Allah, his family and his companions. Wa alaikum assalam wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh. As to what follows: In response to your question, we say:   A person should following the sighting of his country because of what was transmitted in Sunan at-Tirmithi from the hadith  of Abu Hurairah that he said, “The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said, “The beginning of fasting is on the day that the people fast, the breaking of the fast is on the day  that the people break their fast, and the sacrifice is the on the day that the people sacrifice.” [At-Tirmithi (697)].  At-Tirmithi (may Allah have mercy on him) said, “Some scholars interpreted this hadith to mean that the beginning of fasting for Ramadan and ending it should be with the majority of the people”.
