Is it permissible to read, wrote or listen to love poems

? حكم شعر الغزل : كتابة وقراءة واستماعا

Answer

All praise is due to Allah alone, and may the Salah and Salam of Allah be upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family and his companions.

To answer your question, we say while seeking the success from Allah:

It is incumbent on believers to know that they will be held accountable for their words they utter and actions they do for all their actions and words will be recorded as Allah, the Most High, said (interpretation of the meaning): {Man does not utter any word except that with him is an observer prepared [to record].} [Quran 50:18] and {There is no soul but that it has over it a protector.} [Quran 68:4] and the Prophet (may the Salah and Salam of Allah be upon him) said: “Whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day should speak a good word or remain silent.” Reported by al-Bukhari (5559) and Muslim (47).

There scholars are in agreement that it is not allowed to read, speak or listen to speeches and words that may arouse desires or allure people to commit something forbidden. Indeed, the hearts are weak and desires are like thieves. The people of knowledge stated that reciting erotic poetry and poems that allure people to corruption is punishable. However, if love poems do not address a person that is unlawful for the poet to address or include anything unlawful, scholars were lenient about its ruling. In all cases, the Muslim should make sure not to misguide others or be misguided.

Your brother,

Prof. Khalid al-Musleh
