What is the ruling on decorating the mosque?

حكم زخرفة المسجد

Answer

Praise be to Allah, and may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon the Messenger of Allah, his family and his companions.
As to what follows:
With regards to answering your question we say, success is by Allah Almighty.
It was reported by Sufyan al-Thawri from Abu Farza from Yazid Ibn al-A’aswam from Ibn Abas who said that The Messenger of Allah (peace be on him) said:
“I was not commanded to build high mosques. Ibn Abbas said: You will certainly adorn them as the Jews and Christians did.”
The pious predecessors forbade decoration of Mosques. Bukhari narrates on the authority of Abu Said who said that:
“The roof of the mosque was built from date-palms (during the time of the Prophet (peace be upon him)." Then Umar instructed the people to build the mosque (when he was the caliph), and he said, “Protect the people from rain, but do not use a red or yellow colour (on the roof), and thereby distract the people.” Anas said, "The people will vie with one another in boasting about the mosque but they will rarely go there for worship and he repeated the words of ibn Abas which we mentioned earlier.”
The scholars within their different schools of thought held the view that decorating of mosques is detestable.
And Allah knows best.

Your brother,
Dr. Khalid al-Muslih
