Respected Shaykh, let’s say I set up a shop or a dry cleaner, then I rent it out to workers for two thousand. Is this permissible or not?

ترجمة جواب الفتوى: تعاقد الكفيل مع عماله بأجر

Praise be to Allah, and may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon the Messenger of Allah, his family and his companions.

To proceed:

In response to your question, we say, and with Allah Almighty lies all success:
In reality this is a type of contract between the sponsor and the sponsored. It is also a compliance contract that compels the sponsored with conditions which might be unacceptable or oppressive. The sponsor might get what he does not deserve. In my own opinion, the safest thing to do for a person is leaving these types of contracts, especially if the applicable regulations in the country do not permit this.
Some sponsors bring in workers on the basis that they will get a salary, but they then tell them that there is no salary for them, or they instruct them that they should work in a certain manner, if not they will go back to their countries. This is not fulfilling obligations. Allah the Exalted says: “O you who believe! Fulfill (your) obligations.” [al-Maaidah: 1].
It is incumbent for rich people to fear Allah and behave in a manner that protects everyone’s rights. Some say I will behave in this manner because the workers eat my money and do not give me my rights, but this is not a good behavior, because injustice is not removed by injustice.
