Indeed all praise is due to Allah; we praise Him and seek His help. Whoever Allah guides, none can mislead, but he whom He leads astray you will never find for him a protecting guide. I bear witness that none is worthy of worship except Allah, and I bear witness that Muhammad is His servant and Messenger.

To proceed:

Fear Allah O believing servants of Allah! And thank Him as He deserves to be thanked, He will respond to your supplications, have mercy on the weak among you and He will relieve your sorrows and hardships. He deserves to be praised a lot for that. Praise and glory be to Him. We abide by His law, follow His commandments and refrain from His prohibitions. Therefore give thanks O servants of Allah, for indeed a few of Allah’s servants are grateful.

O believers!

One of the greatest favors and mercy of Allah Almighty on His servants is that He made supplication and asking Him part of the best forms of worship and ways of drawing closer to Him. Nu’man Ibn Bashir (may Allah be pleased with him) reports that the Messenger of Allah (peace be on him) said: “supplication is an act of worship.” [Reported by Abu Dawud: 1479, Tirmidhi: 2969]. Thus with His pure grace and great goodness, Allah made supplication a core act and a pillar of worshiping Him. To this end, Allah says: “So, call you (O Muhammad and the believers) upon (or invoke) Allah making (your) worship pure for Him (Alone) (by worshipping none but Him and by doing religious deeds sincerely for Allah’s sake only and not to show-off and not to set up rivals with Him In worship).” [ghaafir: 14].

O believers!

Verily, Allah Almighty commanded you to supplicate to Him and promised you His response as a favor to you. In this regard He says: “And Your Lord said: Invoke Me, [i.e. believe In My Oneness (Islamic Monotheism)] (and ask Me for anything) I will respond to Your (invocation).” [ghaafir: 60]. O believers! Invoke Allah by way of supplication and asking Him anything, because Allah has threatened a painful and shameful punishment to a person who turns away from invoking Him when He said: “Verily! Those who scorn My Worship [i.e. do not invoke Me, and do not ask Me] they will surely enter Hell In humiliation!” [ghaafir: 60].

Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) reports that the Messenger of Allah (peace be on him) said: “Allah is angry with a person who does not ask Him.” [Transmitted by Tirmidhi: 3373, Bukhari in Adab al-Mufrad (2/114), Ibn Majah 3827 and Ahmad (2/443, 447)].

Therefore ask Allah O believers! And seek all your needs from Him, big and small, those that you want instantly and those that you want in the future for indeed every matter is in Allah’s hands. No one can withhold what He gives andno one can give what He withholds. To this end Allah says: “And if Allah touches you with hurt, there is none who can remove it but He; and if He intends any good for you, there is none who can repel his favour.” [Yunus: 107].

The mother of believers, ‘Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) says: “Ask Allah everything even if it is a string for indeed if Allah does not make it easy then it will not be easy.” [Narrated by Abu Ya’La: (4/312)].

Therefore ask Allah everything O servants of Allah, for verily, Allah loves a servant of His who asks and persuades Him, tells Him his needs and who insists in his asking and requesting because Allah is generous and kind, His hands are widely outstretched, He gives and spends how He pleases, Blessed then is Allah, the Lord of the Worlds, in Whose hands is the sovereignty, and has power to do all things.

O believers!

Verily from the perfection of Allah’s generosity and kindness, and from the completeness of His richness and Self-Subsistence is that He tells his servants to ask Him and request from Him. Buhkari (1145) and Muslim (758) transmit a hadith on the authority of Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) who said that the Messenger of Allah (peace be on him) said: “Our Lord, the Blessed and Exalted, descends to the lowest heaven every night when a third of the night remains. He says, 'Who is calling on Me so that I can answer him? Who is asking Me for something so that I can give to him? "Who is asking Me for forgiveness so that I can forgive him?”

O believing servants of Allah! Is there any deception or loss worse than leaving to ask Allah the One who is Generous and Kind, Who in His hands lies every matter and to Whom do all affairs return? He is so generous that he calls all his slaves so that they could ask from Him all that they wish. Wahb Ibn Munbih (may Allah have mercy on him) said to a man who used to go and receive things from some rich people: Woe to you, how dare you go to people who close their doors on you, inform you about your poverty and show you their richness while you leave the One who opens His door to you, inform you about His richness and calls you to ask Him saying: invoke Me and I will respond to you? [Hilyatul Awliyaa’ (4/34)].

Therefore strive O servants of Allah, in asking your Protector everything you wish, for indeed you will not finish that which is good if you ask or hope for it. Abu Sa’eed al-Khudri (may Allah have mercy on him) said that the messenger of Allah (peace be on him) said: “Whenever a Muslim supplicates Allah, He accepts his supplication or averts any similar kind of trouble from him until he prays for something sinful or something that may break the ties of kinship.” Upon this someone of the Companions said: “Then we shall supplicate plenty.” The Messenger of Allah (peace be on him) said, “Allah is more plentiful (in responding).” [Transmitted by Ahmad (3/18), al-Hakim (1/670, number 1816)].

O believers!

Verily invoking Allah Almighty, asking Him in supplication and complaining to him is one of the most beneficial medicines. Thus supplication is an enemy of adversity; it prevents it, cures, lessens it and lifts it. With supplication and invoking Allah, nothing will worry you. Thawban (may Allah be pleased with him) reports that the Messenger of Allah (peace be on him) said: “Nothing turns back the Decree except supplication.” [Transmitted by Tirmidhi (2139), al-Tabrani (6/251) and al-Buzar (6/502)].

O believers!

Supplicate to Allah and ask Him, and strive to adopt etiquettes of supplicating which increase the reward thereof and makes the supplication to be readily accepted. Indeed supplicating has etiquettes, some which are compulsory and others which are desirable. They have clear effects with regards to getting what is required and warding off what is not required. One of the compulsory etiquettes of supplicating is that a servant should be sincere with Allah in his supplication, thus he does not call out to anyone along with Allah, nay but he only calls to Allah without ascribing partners to him, as Allah instructed when He said: “And the Mosques are for Allah (Alone), so invoke not anyone along with Allah.” [al-Jinn: 18].

Therefore, invoking anything other than Allah and asking it like asking the deceased or living is considered as associating partners with Allah which render good deeds vain and calls for the anger of Allah, the Supreme and Irresistible. So fear Allah O believing servants of Allah, and single Him out when asking, supplicating and requesting. In this regard, Allah says: “For Him (Alone) is the word of Truth (i.e. none has the Right to be worshipped but He). And those, whom they (polytheists and disbelievers) invoke, answer them no more than one who stretches forth his Hand (at the edge of a deep well) for water to reach his mouth, but it reaches Him not, and the invocation of the disbelievers is nothing but an error (i.e. of no use).” [al-Ra’d: 14].

O believers!

Other etiquettes of supplicating are calling Allah by His beautiful names and His lofty attributes as well as praising Him as Allah said: “And (all) the Most beautiful names belong to Allah , so call on Him by them.” [al-A’raaf: 180].

Then after this you should send salutations to the last Messenger (may Allah’s peace be on him) for indeed ‘Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated: “Indeed the supplication stops between the heavens and the earth. Nothing of it is raised up until you send salutations upon your Prophet (peace be on him). [Transmitted by Tirmidhi (486)].

O believers! Another etiquette of supplicating is asking what is good and staying away from sins, cutting ties of kinship and hastening. Muslim (2735) narrates a hadith on the authority of Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (may Allah’s peace be on him) said: “The supplication of a slave continues to be granted as long as he does not supplicate for a sinful thing or for something that would cut off the ties of kinship and he does not grow impatient.” Bukhari (6340) and Muslim (2735) also narrate that that the Messenger of Allah (may Allah’s peace be on him) said: “The supplication of every one of you will be granted if he does not get impatient and say (for example): 'I supplicated to my Lord but my prayer has not been granted.” It was said: "O Messenger of Allah! What does growing impatient mean?" He (may Allah’s peace be on him) said, "It is one's saying: 'I supplicated again and again but I do not think that my prayer will be answered.' Then he becomes frustrated (in such circumstances) and gives up supplication altogether.

O believers! Another etiquette of supplicating is having good hope in Allah Almighty for indeed Allah responds to the supplication for verily, Allah listens to the prayer of every suppliant whenever he calls to Him. The Messenger of Allah (peace be on him) said: “Call upon Allah while being certain of being answered.” [Hilyatul Awliyaa’ (4/43)].

‘Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that: “I am not worried about response, however I am worried about supplicating for verily whoever is worried about supplication then he will be responded to.”

O believers! One of the most important reasons which makes a supplication responded to is eating lawful food and drink and wearing lawful clothing. Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) reports that the Messenger of Allah (peace be on him) said: “Allah the Almighty is Good and accepts only that which is good, Then he (peace be on him) mentioned [the case] of a man who, having journeyed far, is dishevelled and dusty, and who spreads out his hands to the sky saying “O Lord! O Lord!” while his food is unlawful, his drink is unlawful, his clothing is unlawful, and he has been nourished with unlawful things, so how can [his supplication] be answered?” [Transmitted by Muslim (1015)].

Fear Allah O believers! And leave all unlawful earnings because the good in this world and in the hereafter is missed due to unlawful earnings which many a times will only result in temporary pleasure or false happiness. The following words of Allah should be sufficient for you to refrain from unlawful earnings: “Allah will destroy usury and will give increase for deeds of charity, alms, etc.” [al-Baqarah: 276].

SECOND SERMON

Indeed all praise is due to Allah; we praise Him, seek His help, and ask for His forgiveness. We seek refuge in Allah from the evil of ourselves and actions. Whoever Allah guides, none can mislead, but he whom He leads astray you will never find for him a protecting guide. I bear witness that none is worthy of worship except Allah, and I bear witness that Muhammad is His servant and Messenger. May Allah’s peace and blessings be on Muhammad, his companions, and those who follow him in goodness until the Day of Judgment.

To proceed.

O believers! Increase in asking Allah Almighty and supplicating to Him in good and bad times and in prosperity and in adversity because supplication is a great act of worship with which Allah raises degrees of honour and erases sins. With it hope and desires are achieved. While advising Ibn ‘Abbas (May Allah be pleased with him), the Messenger of Allah (peace be on him) said: “Recognize and acknowledge Allah in times of ease and prosperity, and He will remember you in times of adversity.” [Transmitted by Ahmad (2800)].

Therefore strive O you who hope for grace and response to your invocation. Strive in supplicating to Allah Almighty, search for times where supplication is readily answered like the hour (between ‘Asr and Maghrib prayer) on Friday, the last portion of the night, between Adhan and Iqaamah, the time which comes immediately after performing obligatory prayers and other blessed times. Call Allah with hearts that are humbled and humiliated. Insist on calling Allah with love and reverence. Beg Allah Almighty with His beautiful names and attributes. Raise your hands while supplicating except in cases where raising hands is not stated in Quran or Sunnah.

Face the direction of Makkah when supplicating, praise Allah Almighty in every good way, send salutations to the Messenger of Allah (peace be on him) in your supplication, have good hope in Allah the Exalted and hope for the best from Him then know that a supplication which comprise of these things has lesser chances of being rejected.
