Question

Dear respected Shaykh, assalamu alaikum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh. Does the fasting person break his fast if he donates blood? الصائم إذا تبرع بالدم

Answer

Praise be to Allah, and may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon the Messenger of Allah, his family and his companions.   Wa alaikum assalam wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh.   As to what follows:   In response to your question, we say:   Concerning donating blood; it does not break the fast in and of itself. However, if a person donates blood in a situation of necessity and this results in his weakness after donating blood, this invalidates his fast.  That is, if he donates blood, remains healthy and the doctor does not say anything to him the his fast is valid. However, if he is affected by weakness or infirmity,  in this case, he will break his fast because of the sickness that has affected him. However, donating blood does not initially break the fast if it does not weaken a person. There is no problem in that. If it makes a person weak, he should avoid it.   As for awarding marks for donating blood, I do not know about that, but I have misgivings about it.  Marks should not be awarded for such things. Therefore grading and passing in subjects and examinations should not be based on that.  I fear that the teacher may be acting outside his role. If he wants to raise the grades of the students let him make them research and participate if part of the topic consists of practical work. He may also task the student to serve the community in a practical way, and this is not putting forward his hand to the teacher for donating blood. Although this may be beneficial, it is not work, and a person does not gain anything from it. Education is for gaining skills, and in this situation there are no skills except if he says, “This is to train students to be generous”. However, I have misgivings about this issue. It is better for him to seek alternative means to encourage them. A student should look for another way to raise his grades and not donate blood for that.
