Question

Dear respected Shaykh, assalamu alaikum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh. Does a nosebleed affect fasting?

هل يؤثر نزول الدم من الأنف على الصيام؟

Answer

Praise be to Allah, and may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon the Messenger of Allah, his family and his companions.   Wa alaikum assalam wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh.   As to what follows:   In response to your question, we say:   Bleeding does not affect fasting, rather, your fasting is valid. Bleeding whether voluntary or involuntary does not annul fasting according to the correct opinion from the two opinions of the scholars.  If bleeding is involuntary , there is a consensus of opinion that it does not invalidate the fast. However, the scholars differed concerning cupping. Some scholars held that cupping breaks fast, and the majority of the scholars are of the opinion that it does not  break the fast.   In short: A nosebleed does not affect the validity of your fast.
