Question

Dear respected Shaykh, assalamu alaikum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh What is the ruling of fasting after having taken pills to prevent menstruation?

ما حكم استمرار الصوم باستعمال المانع لإيقاف الدم؟

Answer

Praise be to Allah, and may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon the Messenger of Allah, his family and his companions.   Wa alaikum assalam wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh.   As to what follows:   In response to your question, we say:     There are three conditions for the permissibility of taking medication to prevent menstruation: Firstly, there should be no harm to the woman from the medication; because this process involves keeping unsound blood (so care must be taken to avoid harm) Secondly, the medication should not lead to a disruption of the menstrual cycle. The third and last condition is that this should be after medical consultation. Why should a woman take medical advice? Because at times she may take tablets based on her estimations and the menstruation does not stop and she will become confused. She will become uncertain and be perplexed as to whether she is pure and should fast, or whether she is impure and should not fast? In any case if a woman takes pills and prevents her menstruation, then her fast is valid.
