Question

Does leaving Makkah every time require Tawaf Al–Wada'?

هل كل خروج من مكة يشترط له طواف وداع؟

Answer

All praise is due to Allah alone, and may the Salah and Salam of Allah be upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family and his companions. To answer your question, we say while seeking all the success from Allah: There are two scenarios for the pilgrim who leaves Makkah either before or after completing the rituals: The first scenario is that they leave to fulfill a need whilst possessing the intention to return to Makkah and the second scenario is that they leave Makkah without intending to return back. In the case of the former, the pilgrim is not required to do Tawaf al-Wada’ while in the case of the latter they are required to do so. This is based on the hadith of ‘Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) reported by al-Bukhari (1518) and Muslim (1211) wherein the Prophet (may the Salah and Salam of Allah be upon him) allowed her to commence the Umrah from al-Tan’eem, which is located outside al-Haram, and did not order her to do Tawaf al-Wada’ when she left towards that location because her intention was to return back to Makkah. And Allah knows best. Your brother,

Khalid al-Mosleh
