Question

I have a one-legged friend who wants to perform Hajj and Umrah but he is too embarrassed to wear the clothing of ihram as that will show his disability. Is he allowed to wear normal clothes?

الإحرام بالثوب خوفاً من الإحراج

Answer

All praise is due to Allah alone, and may the Salah and Salam of Allah be upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family and his companions. To answer your question, we say while seeking all the success from Allah: If wearing the clothes of ihram will restrain his movement or cause him any harm, then he is allowed to wear normal clothes and then expiate his failure to fulfill this obligation by slaughtering a sheep, fasting three days or feeding six poor people by giving each of them half a saa’. However, if wearing the garments of ihram will not cause him any harm but only embarrassment, then he is not allowed to wear normal clothes in their place. And whoever fears Allah, He will make for him a way out and perhaps this feeling of embarrassment is not warranted but rather it exists due to the racing of his mind. He should praise Allah for all the graces and blessings he still has and all that which Allah has not taken away from him. Your brother, Khalid al-Mosleh   27/11/1424.
