Question

Dear respected Shaykh, assalamu alaikum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh. I am repairing a house. The people who are doing the work are not Muslims. My question is, “What is the ruling of cooking for these people and feeding them during the day in Ramadan?

حكم إطعام الكفار في نهار رمضان

Answer

Praise be to Allah, and may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon the Messenger of Allah, his family and his companions. Wa alaikum assalam wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh. As to what follows: In response to your question, we say: It is permissible to feed nonbelievers because of the generality of Allah the Exlated’s statement that: “Allah does not forbid you to deal justly and kindly with those who did not fight against you on account of religion and did not drive you out of your homes. Verily, Allah loves those who deal with equity” [al-Mumtahanah 60: 8], and the statement of the Prophet (peace be upon him) which was transmitted by al-Bukhari and Muslim that “there is a reward for service to every living animal” [Al-Bukhari (2363) Muslim (2244)].
