Question

Dear respected Shaykh, assalamu alaikum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh. Fifteen years ago I acquired a piece of residential land. I bought it with the intention of selling it. Five years ago I resolved to sell it (but I have not sold it up to now). What is the ruling of the Zakat of this land? زكاة الأرض المعدة للتجارة

Answer

Praise be to Allah, and may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon the Messenger of Allah, his family and his companions. Wa alaikum assalam wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh. As to what follows: In response to your question, we say:   If the land was reserved for sale for all these years, then it is compulsory to give Zakat for it for all these years. However, if you did not know the ruling or thought that Zakat was not compulsory on the land, then the most apparent opinion to me is that the Zakat for this land should be paid for one year.
