Question

Do we say that Allah Almighty’s fingers are of His hand, or do we refrain [from saying such]? هل نقول أصابع الله عز وجل ليده أم نتوقف؟

Answer

Praise be to Allah, and may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon the Messenger of Allah, his family and his companions.

As to what follows:

It appears that the fingers attributed to Allah Almighty are of His hand. What attests to this is what has been narrated from the hadith of `Abdullah bin Mas`ud (may Allah be pleased with him), who said that a rabbi came to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) and said, “O Muhammad! Allah will put the heavens on one finger, the earth on one finger, the mountains on one finger, the trees and the rivers on one finger, and the rest of the creation on one finger, and then will say, pointing out with His Hand, ‘I am the King.’” On that, the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) laughed and said:

“They have not made a just estimate of Allah such as is due to Him, while on the Day of Resurrection, the whole of the earth will be grasped by His hand and the heavens will be rolled up in His right hand.” [Al-Zumar 39:67]

 [Bukhari (7451) and Muslim (2786)]

And Allah knows best.

Khalid bin `Abdullah al-Muslih
