Question

Dear respected Shaykh, assalamu alaikum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh. What is the ruling on entering a place of relieving oneself carrying cassettes that has Quran on them, or cassettes that has dhikr.

دخول مكان قضاء الحاجة بأشرطة القرآن

Answer

Praise be to Allah, and may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon the Messenger of Allah, his family and his companions.
Wa alaikum assalam wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh.
As to what follows:
What is apparent is that it is allowed to enter into the toilet or a place of relieving oneself with Quranic cassettes, nor is it detestable to enter with audio material that has adhkaar on it.
As for entering the toilet or a place of relieving oneself with Quranic cassettes, rules pertaining to the Quran are not used because a cassette is different from a Quran. This is supported by the fact that what is on the cassette does not show Quranic writing on it, so it is similar to what is memorized in the hearts in terms of appearance.
Likewise, the absence of dislike on entering the toilet with anything that has audio files containing adhkaar is so because it does not take the ruling of what is written, this is from one angle, and from another angle, there are some scholars who are of the view that it is detested to enter into the toilet with that which has adhkaar on it. They said if a man enters the toilet and on him is a ring that has adhkaar on it, he should put the segment of the ring (with adhkaar) inside his palm then hold it with his fingers. It emerges from this that karahah (dislike) results from the appearance of that which is written, so what does not appear is excluded from karahah. The same ruling applies for touching the cassette without taharah (purity).
And Allah knows best.
