Question

What are the virtues of remaining in the mosque after Fajr prayer till sunrise?

ما فضل البقاء بعد صلاة الفجر في المسجد حتى طلوع الشمس؟

Answer

Praise be to Allah, and may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon the Messenger of Allah, his family and his companions.
As to what follows:
With regards to answering your question we say, success is by Allah Almighty.
Remaining in the mosque till the sun has risen is a sunnah that has been firmly established by The Prophet (peace be on him) according to a hadith narrated by Muslim on the authority of Jabi Ibn Samura (may Allah be pleased with him) who said that: “when the Messenger of Allah (peace be on him) observed the dawn prayer, he sat at the place of worship till the sun had risen enough.” However, 2 rak’ats prayer after sunrise has not been firmly established from the actions of The Prophet (peace be on him). It is mentioned in a hadith narrated by Tirmidhi on the authority of Anas Ibn Malik that: The Prophet (peace be on him) said: “Whoever prays Fajr in congregation, then sits remembering Allah until the sun has risen, then he prays two Rak'ah, then for him is the reward like that of a Hajj and Umrah." He said: "The Messenger of Allah said: 'Complete, complete, complete.” Tirmidhi said this hadith is sound but strange. What is apparent is that it is not firmly established on The Prophet (peace be on him)
