From the way of Ibn `Abbas, as well as others among the Salaf, in understanding the Qur’an, is that he would mention what the verse indicates and directs to. So someone [who comes later] thinks that this is the meaning of the verse of which there is no other meaning besides, thus narrating this as his opinion [on the meaning of this verse]; whereas he only meant that this is what the verse indicated and directed to, not that the verse specifically meant that.
