Dear respected Shaykh, assalamu alaikum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh. What is the ruling of breaking fast for a traveler in Ramadan?

ما حكم الفطر في رمضان للمسافر؟

Answer

Praise be to Allah, and may Allah’s peace and blessings abe upon the Messenger of Allah, his family and his companions.   Wa alaikum assalam wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh.   As to what follows:   In response to your question, we say:     Travelling is a concession in which Allah has made it permissible to leave fasting.  Allah the Exalted said, “and whoever is ill or on a journey, the same number [of days which one did not observe Saum (fasts) must be made up] from other days “ [al-Baqarah 2: 185], and He said in the verse the preceded the obligation of fasting, “but if any of you is ill or on a journey, the same number (should be made up) from other days” [Al-Baqarah 2: 184]. Thus it is permissible for a traveler to leave fasting as long as he is fasting.
